If you’re thinking about selling your car anytime soon, you’re probably wondering how you can get the most money from your potential buyer. In this age of Craigslist and Facebook sales, it’s never been easier to list your vehicle on your own. But setting a price (and feeling confident in it during negotiations!) can be tricky. You can find a price range on car advisor sites, but how do you make sure your vehicle can be marketed at the high end of that range? Here are some tips to get the most money when you’re ready to sell your car or truck.
Nothing makes a potential buyer feel more confident about a vehicle than knowing it’s been serviced consistently. Keep a record of your oil changes and other routine maintenance tasks recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Check your owner’s manual to learn when you should have belts checked and your air filter replaced.
While you don’t have to put brand new tires on a car to sell it, you’ll get more money from a buyer if they don’t have to worry about buying tires, too. If the tread on your tires is getting low, you could think about buying new tires or buying a good set of used tires from your dependable tire shop.
If the buyer is worried they’ll have to spend money on repairs right after buying a new vehicle, they’re going to want to knock that off the price now. Get windshield chips and cracks repaired as soon as possible so they don’t get worse. And if you’ve got a lot of chips or a large crack, replace that windshield. You’ll usually spend less money on repairs and replacement than what you would have lost in sale price.
Between dirt, mud, gravel, kids, and daily life, our cars and trucks take a lot of abuse! Take your car into a local detailer to have it thoroughly cleaned out before you take those “for sale” pictures. If you’ve got time to do it yourself, that’s great! But detailers often can get those hard-to-reach areas cleaned, and their seat and carpet shampooing brings a vehicle back to looking new.
